LA PLATA/INZA DECAF - COLOMBIA

This might be the best Decaf we've ever had in the roastery.

It's not often a decaf comes in that really goes toe to toe with our favourite caffeinated beans, but this certainly is one. Nougat, chocolate and blueberry notes positively bursting out of the cup. A proper delight, the only downside being we've just the one sack available.

Our importer Mercanta have worked with a local Colombian team to combine beans from smallholders from two different regions in the country. After blending, the beans are decaffeinated using the Sugarcane EA method (a bit more info on this below for those who like more detail).

La Plata is bang in the middle of Huila - one of Colombia's most prominent growing regions, nestled amongst the Andes. Inza faces beautifully out of the Pacific Ocean, tucked in the corner of Cauca, a region previously unfortunately more known for FARC guerillas than speciality coffee, but thankfully this is changing.

Sugarcane EA decaf uses Ethyl Acetate (a by-product of sugar cane fermentation), steam and a water solution to gently remove the caffeine. The beans are then steamed again to remove the solvent.
